Description

Ficus carica ‘LSU Purple’

This fig was introduced in 1991 by LSU. It is small to medium sized fig with purple skin and strawberry pulp. Flavor is outstanding and has better shelf life than most varieties. Well adapted to South, LSU Purple has the ability to friut on new growth if the top is killed by a winter freeze. Hardiness not established but probably hardy to 12 degrees when fully dormant (not as hardy as Celeste or Brown Turkey). Fruit does not split as badly following rains as other varieties. The fruit has a closed eye which helps with insect and fungal problems.  Plant in full sun in well drained soil.  Figs can be grow in sandy or clay soils. Height 10 to 20 feet. Hardy in zones 8-10.  Self-fruitful.  Makes a good container plant for your deck or patio.  Plants are shipped in 1 gallon sized containers.
