Winterberry, Ilex verticillata, ‘Winter Red’
Winter Red will be the star of your winter landscape. Foliage is a deep dark green & the berries deep, dark red. Fruit set is heavy. All deciduous hollies are dioecious meaning the males & female flowers are on different plants. Only the females have berries but they need a male for pollination. Southern Gentleman is a good choice for Winter Red—you only need one male for 4-6 females. This shrub will grow to 6-9’ tall and can be grown in full sun to part shade in moist to wet soil. Winter Red makes a great accent plant, a gorgeous hedge, is good in the back of the border or in a woodland setting. 40 species of birds are known to eat the fruit of winterberry—providing them a great source of nutrition at a time when other sources are not as readily available. Plants are shipped in 1 gallon containers.
