Description

Edgeworthia, Paperbush, or Edgeworthia chrysantha,

is a deciduous shrub with a faded yellow fall color.  It blooms in late winter into the middle of spring with yellow tubular shaped flowers that have a strong and pleasing fragrance.  These flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Because of this early bloom it works well with other winter blooms.  Being a deciduous plant, when the bloom comes in, the foliage has already fallen off causing the blooms to stand out amongst the branches.   The foliage is oblong shaped and slowly changes to a faded yellow before falling off in the fall. During the summer when it is green, it has a silvery underside the shines in the sun.  It typically grows 4-6ft tall and 4-6ft wide when cultivated, but can grow as high as 15ft.  It needs full sun to partial shade in the afternoon and is intolerant of hot dry summers.  Having the hot summer sun in the afternoon when it’s strongest will damage it.  It needs mediums amount of water, not letting it dry out, with moist soil that is good drainage and has Acid (6.0), Alkaline (>8.0), and Neutral (6-8) in it.  It is shipped in a 1-gallon container.
