Description
Yellow Bells Forsythia or Forsythia,
is a deciduous shrub that blooms gold flowers from early winter to spring. It is native to China, Japan, and southeast Europe. The pedals bloom before or during the growth of the foliage which makes the gold petals stand out since the foliage is hard to see or not there. They often times are regarded as the harbinger of spring because it begins to bloom before most other plants in spring and bring color to the garden when others are beginning to sprout. It is a sign that spring is just starting and soon the other plants will begin to bloom their own flowers. After their time to bloom ends they begin to fade into the background as they look much like the other plants during the rest of the year which gives them their other name one-season wonder. However the leaves do change to a yellow green and sometimes purple during the fall and while looking like other plants around it, it is a beautiful plant to look at both spring, summer, and fall. They also produce fruit non-ornamental fruit that are brown and small capsule sized. It grows 3-10ft and 4-7ft wide and it grows best in full sun and will produce more flowers in full sun than partial shade but will grow in partial shade. It needs medium amount of water in well-drained soil. It has a hardiness zone of 5-8 and is resistant to cold winters but not the coldest or hottest areas of the United States. Getting closer to -5°F will stunt its growth. It is best to prune right after its spring flowering because if waited till the summer you will cut off flower buds that have already started to grow that are meant for next spring’s bloom. It is shipped in a 1-gallon container.
