Description

Ficus carica “Alma”

Alma was released by the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in 1974.  The small to medium sized golden brown pear-shaped fuit has excellent sweet rich flavor. The fruit ripens late beginning in late July to early August.  The eye of Alma is sealed with a resin-like substance that prevents the dried fruit beetle from entering.  Plant in full sun in well drained soil.  Figs grow well in sandy as well as clay soils.  Alma is a little frost sensitive as a young plant so winter protection may be needed the first year. Self-fertile.  Hardy in zones 8-10 but can be grown as a container plant.  Height:  20 feet. Plants are shipped in 1 gallon sized containers.
