Vaccinium ashei ‘Climax’

This is a University of Georgia release. It is best adapted in central and southern Alabama (south of Birmingham) to north Florida and similar areas in the Southeast. The chill hour requirement (45 degrees Fahrenheit and below) is 400 to 450 hours. The harvest season is from June 7 to July 2 here at Petals. The plant structure is somewhat spreading to generally upright, low to medium canes per plant. The fruit is large to very large size, medium blue, berries are very firm, excellent flavor with crunchy texture. Fruits can be left on plant until 3/4 of crop is ready for harvest. Plant in full sun in will drained acid soil with a ph of 4.2 to 5.5.  A good pollinator for Climax would be Austin or Premier.  Hardy in zones 7-9. Plants are shipped in one gallon containers.
