Description

Azalea Wetland, Swamp Azalea, or Rhododendron viscosum,

is a deciduous shrub that is one of the 17 species of azalea that are native to the United States.  It is often found in swamps, bogs, streams, and wet lowlands explaining how it got one of its common names “Swamp Azalea”.    While the name Swamp might make you think that it can stay submerged in water and grow, it in fact cannot and its growth will be stunted. Still, it needs to stay wet and never letting the roots dry out, so the soil needs to be well-drained in order that the Azalea will not be sitting under a pool of water.  It can tolerate moments of flooding but cannot remain submerged indefinitely. The flowers bloom white in late spring and through the middle of summer.  They have 4-5 petals on each flower that attract bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, moths, pollinators, small mammals, and specialized bees.  It should never be planted next to a black walnut or butternut tree because the roots from both of these trees produce toxic juglones which will typically damage or kill azaleas growing within the drip line.  It has a hardiness zone of 4-9 so it can be planted in most places in the United States.  It needs dappled shade or high open part shade and will scorch if it receives full sun unless it is always wet.  Every part of this plant has high severity poison characteristics and should not be consumed by humans and could cause severe illness.  Animals can also have severe problems if consumed.  It is shipped in a 1-gallon container.
