Pyrus pyrifolia ‘Shinko’
An outstanding Asian pear selection for fruit gardens in the Southeast. Chilling requirement is estimated at 400 to 500 hours below 45 degrees. Among the asian pear selections available, Shinko the least problem with fire blight. Trees will attain a height of 15ft. and greater but can be maintained at 12ft.(lower if grown on a trellis) Fruits are medium to large in size (3/8 to 3/4 lbs) with delicious flavor. Ripens early to mid September in Central Alabama. You must have another asian pear variety for cross pollination. Marginal in the warner parts of coastal Alabama. Adapted to plant hardiness zones 6-8 and possible further north. Plants are a 3 gallon size and are shipped bare root.
