Description
Warren’s Red Possumhaw, Ilex decidua ‘Warren’s Red’
This is another great native for the winter garden! Warren’s Red is a cultivar of the deciduous holly called Possum Haw—it is an upright grower with glossy green leaves in spring and summer and larger than usual red berries in fall and winter. It can be trained as multi-stemmed large shrub or to a single trunk tree and can reach heights when mature of 10-20’. Once established, this native is tolerant of a variety of conditions, including wet to dry and full sun to shade. Warren’s Red needs a male Ilex decidua for pollination or a native male Ilex opaca. Birds love the berries. Warren’s Red is often used as a screening plant, a specimen plant, a focal point, a waterside plant or even a ‘beside the house’ small shade tree. Zone: 5-9
