Description

Sweetshrub or Carolina Allspice, ‘Calycanthus floridus’

 This deciduous colony-forming fragrant shrub has be  en a popular southern landscaping shrub since its introduction in 1726. It is said that in the 1800’s, women used the fragrant flowers as perfume, hiding them away in their clothes.   Sweetshrub is  densely rounded reaching heights of 6-8’ or more; it grows  in part shade to sun, moist to dry soil.  Dark maroon fragrant flowers appear late spring –summer.  Beautiful yellow fall color.  Good as specimens, foundation planting, hedges, mixed borders and woodland gardens. Plants are shipped in 1 gallon containers.  Zone: 5-10.
