Description
Hydrangea Penny Mac, Big Leaf Hydrangea, or Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Penny Mac’.
is a deciduous shrub that produces blue or pink hydrangea blooms in late summer through early fall. The change in color is determined by the amount of acid in the soil. For a bluer bloom it needs more acid in the soil and for a pinker bloom it needs more alkaline. The unique thing about the Penny Mac is that it blooms on old and new growth and is winter hardy into USDA Zone 5, which means it blooms each year regardless of how cold it is and whether it’s new or old, as long as it is not below zone 5. Being a deciduous shrub its foliage changes color in the fall to a beautiful mix of purple and red before falling to the ground. It grows 4-6 ft tall and 4-6ft wide. It needs partial shade or deep shade. It can only tolerate full sun if the soil remains consistently moist, otherwise it needs medium amounts of water in well-drained soil. It is typically used for foundation planting, hedge, or privacy screening. It is shipped in a 1 gallon container.
