Description

Buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis

A great under-utilized deciduous native shrub that is covered  with wonderful white fuzzy pincushion like flowers in wet areas, it can also tolerate  dry.  Butterflies, bees and other pollinators find the nectar of the fragrant flower summer irrisitible.   Buttonbush is quite adaptable, growing in full sun to part shade and though it naturally grows in swamp-like heads.  This plant is not only a great source of nectar, but  is also a larval host plant for butterflies and the seeds are enjoyed by birds.  Foliage is a rich glossy green with red veins with bronze/burgundy/yellow tones in fall.  Great in shrub borders, at the edge of ponds, in rain gardens, woodland areas, & ideal for erosion control. Height: 5-12’. Plants are shipped in 1 gallon containers. Zones 6-10.
